Group Therapy

Group therapy is a powerful, cost-effective, and unique form of psychotherapy that is often extremely helpful for many people, across diagnostic categories. Most of my group members participate in concurrent individual therapy when they do group, as this provides the best treatment outcomes.

I offer group therapy to my own individual therapy patients or to individual patients referred to me by other clinicians. People participating in group are usually quite familiar with the format of psychotherapy and have always had the group guidelines thoroughly explained to them before deciding to join group. When people join group, they agree to abide by a very clear group agreement, in which they commit to honor the privacy and confidentiality of other group members. They also agree not to have social contact with other group members outside of group.

Group therapy can help people in the following ways:
  • Provide an opportunity for honest, constructive feedback between group members about how they impact each other.
  • Resolve isolation, shame and guilt by experiencing acceptance when openly sharing one's thoughts and feelings in group.
  • Increase one's confidence in knowing when and how to trust others.
  • Resolve social anxiety.
  • Heal from past interpersonal traumas (e.g. violence or violations of personal trust).
  • Help people establish appropriate social and emotional boundaries and break free from recurrent, negative relationship patterns.
  • Develop insights into one's own pattern of relationships and understand how this relates to early life experiences/relationships.
  • Deepen people's capacity for emotional intimacy in relationship with spouse, family, or friends.
  • Provide an opportunity for honest, constructive feedback between group members about how they impact each other.
